Yellowfin tuna are know by many names, Yellowfin, Ahi, Allison Tuna and a few others. No matter how to refer to this sport fish it is famous for the fight this fish can bring to the table. YellowFin tuna are found all over Mexico on both sides. In the gulf and the Sea of Cortez all the way down to Mazatlan you will find Yellowfin Tuna. This writer personally enjoys sportfishing out of Mazatlan Mexico, but anglers in Cabo San Lucas and La Paz are also in Yellowfin tuna country!

Characteristically they have a very deep meaty body. Although they are very muscled out they are very streamlined. It has a sort of metallic blue back changing to yellow and silver on its belly. A yellow band runs down its side. Large Yellowfins can be easily identified by their large crescent shaped extensions of the anal and the second dorsal fins.

These fish do two things very well, eat and spawn. They reach sexual maturity and are able to spawn at 2-3 years of age with some reaching maturity as early as one year old. They spawn several times a year and are capable of regularly lay up to 8 million eggs, yes this is not a typing error 8 million eggs. They rely on warm waters above 78 degrees to spawn. Hence Mexico and the gulf having such dense populations. Yellowfins are hunters. Food fish leave a smell in the water made up of oils, proteins and amino acids. Very small amounts are left behind when their food source swims. Yellowfin tuna actually track down and hunt their prey when they encounter these smells. Tuna are very predatory hunters and are at the top of the food chain.

They are terrific travelers and regularly migrate thousands of miles. During the day they hang out around coral reefs and other outcroppings. At night they head out to sea to hunt and feed. Furthermore they also go back to the same spot day after day to feed before heading off shore at night. Tagged tuna have been documented during the day hanging around a floating log and going offshore at night and returning to the same log the next day.

Tuna are the athletes of the ocean. When comparing tuna to other less active sport fish tuna have hearts that are ten times larger than comparable fish of the same weight. Their blood pressure is three time higher and pump three times more blood. Tuna are capable fo sustained speeds of 30 miles an hour or better. Yellowfin do not open and close their gills as other fish do. They must be moving constantly to refresh their oxygen supply. This accounts for their nickname of being nuclear torpedoes when on your line. Few fish in the ocean offer such a explosion when in a fight. When hooked the fight is full tilt till in the boat.

Yellowfin tuna weigh anywhere from 15 pounds to well over 200 pounds. Although not as large as a bluefin tuna Yellowfin are considered just as good eating. This writer can eat tuna 4-5 times a week and never tire of the flavor or texture. As tuna flesh ahs a great deal of oils in it the flesh is best grilled or broiled.
